Becoming the client of a commercial artist
Is my job too small for a pro?
If you have a home business to promote or you've built a web site to share what you're passionate about or you have an idea for an event t-shirt and you need some artwork, where do you turn? As a semi-retired veteran of ad agencies, I can tell you that if you look up graphic artists in the Yellow Pages of your home town and find a company, it's very likely that you're too small a client for them to give the kind of service you'd need. Not to mention the markup they have to add to the hourly amount they pay their designers. And illustrators seldom work in-house, so then you're paying markup on the cost of a freelancer's rate. I'm used to dealing with clients who've never worked with a commercial artist before. There's a bit of an educational process and I have a lot of experience with it.
Do I need a scanner or a fax to send my ideas?
If you can send and receive jpeg images by email, you can use an illustrator who's located anywhere in the world. You don't need a scanner to send your scribbles. Just take a shot of them with any digital camera.
Isn't professional illustration expensive?
I'm competing with big sweatshops of artists in the Third World. Ask me for a quote.
Don't we need to meet in person?
We can talk on the phone (for me anywhere in North America 24/7 for free) or Skype and I'm very clear and prompt with email.
Do you trust me to pay?
If it's a big project I may ask for 50% up front. Or I'll send you the art as a low-res jpeg with a watermark over it for your approval. When I receive payment, you'll be sent the artwork in the file format(s) you need to suit your application.
I've written a children's book and need an illustrator to work with me for half the royalties, once we find a publisher?
This is an extremely common request of artists. Sorry, I don't illustrate children's books.
